How PC ‘won’ the home computer market in 1980-1990

Updated: Mar 14, 2021

Back in the ’80s PCs where all the rage of personal computing…..or did they? if you know where to look then your answer should be the Commodore 64. PC back in the day didn’t even win anything. PC back in the day was business-oriented, meaning that graphic and sound is crap on PC compared to other Personal Computers such as the Atari 8 bit home computer, the Commodore 64, the Sinclair spectrum, and the Machintosh with its fancy GUI based OS.

Now don’t get me wrong, PCs back in the day totally dominated the personal computer industry but got overshadowed by the much more superior C64 (Commodore 64). not only that but if you want to play games with rich graphics and smooth sound similar to those found in the Amiga computer games, you have to pay hefty money for it. PC extensions are not cheap, even the freakin Soundblaster card (a PC card which enhances PC sound) will cost you a hundred dollars or even a thousand dollars. but is it worth it though? well….maybe. if you are a hardcore gamer back in the day then yeah you probably want the best graphics and sound. VGA card is your go-to option for enhancing your PC graphics, Soundblaster card is also necessary for smooth stereo sound.

Now so many PC fanboys claim that their machine is superior and always win even back then which is incredibly false. Back then, upgrading your PC’s hardware to get better sound and graphics is not cheap, you have to wait until 1995 came along when PC upgrades are cheap. and even then it sucks to wait for like a decade and a half decade just to get the best gaming experience.

If you ever wonder what PC game graphics look like back in the ’80s then this picture bellow will tell you

Side by side comparison

The picture above is the side by side comparison. the left side of the image is Amiga’s graphic while the right side of the image is PC’s graphic. Now as you can see, the difference is as clear as night and day. not to mention, the picture i’m giving is 100% legit.

not only that but the sound on PC are horrible (if you haven’t installed a sound card). tale a listen: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ZhcgFwKwXMD7XBjGuPJZyIJbKRlqt8qa/view?usp=sharing

now as you can see, this is the reason why i said that PC never truly win anything from early ’80s to 1992. not only PC technology back then is so far behind the current computers but the saddest thing is, is that so many people claim that PC is the most superior machine of all time when in fact upgrading your PC is freaking expensive
