Pepe is the most iconic meme. The meme originated from a comic published on MySpace. Pepe grew popular not just in my space but other platform including 4chan, Gaia online, & etc. Overtime, the meme starting to become stale so users begin to upload these so call “rare pepe”. the Rae pepe quickly went mainstream.
As time progress, pepe become something different. Instead of just innocent meme, pepe now become a symbol of hatred because the alt-right adopted pepe. The original creator of pepe was not happy about it so he start suing the company for using his creation.
Pepe didn’t just end right there though, in 2019 Hong Kong protested against the Beijing government, they use pepe as their protest symbol. Pepe is usually associated with the alt-right and nazis but this time, pepe mean something different in Hong Kong. To Hong kongers, pepe represents a symbol of home, and freedom from tyranny.
Pepe is so mainstream and so widespread because it is modifiable. Making it the easiest meme to customize.
